All Puzzle Types at a Glance
Sudoku Sagax is more than sudoku. Eleven logic puzzles are on offer, from the classic 9x9 through cross sums and picture puzzles to a crowns puzzle without a single digit and Foxhold, where every correct digit strengthens your towers. Each type has its own levels, its own leaderboard and its own trophy.
The eleven puzzle types
Sudoku
The original: 9x9, the digits 1 to 9, four difficulty levels. Start here and every other type makes sense faster.
Killer sudoku
A 9x9 with no given digits at all: solved through cages with target sums. The most demanding variant and, for many, the connoisseur's choice.
X-sudoku
Like a normal sudoku, except both diagonals must also hold 1 to 9. Two extra units to eliminate in.
Jigsaw sudoku
Irregular regions instead of 3x3 blocks, interlocking like puzzle pieces. Same logic, but your practised eye has to reorganise itself.
Kakuro
Cross sums: every run of digits must add up to a given total, using distinct digits only. The crossword of number puzzles.
Nonograms
Numbers beside rows and columns tell you how long the filled runs are, and a picture emerges.
Binary puzzle
A grid of nothing but 0 and 1, with three simple rules. Quick to explain, surprisingly tricky, also known as binairo or takuzu.
Crowns puzzle
Eight crowns on an 8x8 board: one per row, column and colour region, and no two touching. No digits, solved in minutes.
Mini sudoku 6x6
Sudoku in pocket format: 6x6 with the digits 1 to 6. The best way in and the short form for a quick break.
16x16 sudoku
256 squares, the numbers 1 to 16, blocks of 4x4. The long-distance event for evenings you want to sink into.
Foxhold
Sudoku as tower defence: enemies march above the grid towards your den, and every correct digit makes your towers stronger. Solve the grid before the den falls.
Which puzzle type suits you?
Ten types is a lot at once. Three questions are enough to find the right one:
- How much time do you have? Five minutes: the crowns puzzle or mini sudoku. Half an hour: classic sudoku, X-sudoku, jigsaw or a nonogram. A whole evening: 16x16 or a hard killer sudoku.
- Do you like numbers? If so, kakuro and killer take you furthest; there you really do add up. If not, nonograms, the crowns puzzle and the binary puzzle are your pick: nothing there is a digit that means anything.
- Familiar or new? X-sudoku and jigsaw sudoku feel like sudoku with a twist. Nonograms and crowns are an entirely different kind of thinking, which makes them a good counterweight when a sudoku has you stuck.
Frequently asked questions
Which puzzle type should I start with?
Mini sudoku 6x6 or classic sudoku on the easy setting. Both show every basic technique, just at a different pace. If you would rather avoid digits altogether, start with the crowns puzzle: there you only ever eliminate, never calculate.
Do I need an account?
No. Every puzzle type can be played straight away as a guest. You only need an account if you want progress, best times, streaks and leaderboards to be saved.
Do all types count towards the same leaderboard?
Each type has its own leaderboard. In addition, points feed a shared pool for the week, month and overall, with types weighted differently, so a quick short puzzle is not worth as much as a long one.
Do the puzzles cost anything?
No. Every type and every level is free, ad-free and free of trackers. Even the fonts are served from our own server.
