What is a mini sudoku?
A mini sudoku is a sudoku on a 6x6 grid using the digits 1 to 6. The rules are identical to the classic 9x9 game; only the board and the range of digits are smaller. Instead of square 3x3 blocks there are six rectangular blocks of two rows by three columns.
That block shape is the one thing to adjust to: the block is wider than it is tall. Keep that in mind and you can start straight away.

The rules, explained simply
Three rules, the same as in the full-size game:
- Rows. Each of the six rows contains every digit from 1 to 6 exactly once.
- Columns. The same for each of the six columns.
- Blocks. Each of the six blocks — two rows tall, three columns wide — also contains every digit exactly once.
Every puzzle has exactly one solution and every digit follows logically. There is never any guessing.
Why mini sudoku is a good place to start
Six squares per row are enough to show everything that makes a sudoku — only faster:
- Shorter feedback loop. One deduction leads to the next within a few steps. In a 9x9 it takes longer for an insight to pay off; here you see immediately whether your reasoning was right.
- All the basic techniques appear. Naked singles, hidden singles, eliminating across block boundaries: what you learn here transfers unchanged to the full-size game.
- Less bookkeeping. Six possible digits instead of nine means shorter notes — you hold more in your head and write less down.
