The technique: singles plus pointing pairs
- Naked and hidden singles. Most of the puzzle still resolves by counting, as in easy Sudoku. Grab as many cells as possible that way before reaching for pencil marks.
- Note candidates. When you get stuck, write the still-possible digits small into the uncertain cells. Often a hidden single appears at once, one you would miss without the note.
- Pointing pair. If a candidate sits in a block within a single row or column only, it can be removed from the rest of that row or column. This frequently opens the next cell.
